Poll Time - Warrior Dash

Not much to post about today, rather uneventful 3.5 mile run this morning. Went alright, not fantastic, but I got it done without too much pain so I will count it as a success. I just wanted to share photos of my outfit for warrior dash this coming Saturday!

Here is the whole outfit:

And the back of the shirt: (I plan to add my blog addy to the back once I get something easier to remember)

Now for question #1: Which bondiband do I wear? (I show both in the full outfit picture)

I LOVE the saying on the olive green one: "If you see me on the ground drag me across the finish?" But, the pink one is more matchy-matchy and the saying on it works as well "Pain is temporary pride is forever."

how to "recover" from a crap-frickin-tastic run?

First, I apologize because this is going to be a novel, but I need to share my frustrations with this run in an attempt to get past it.

This morning I had what I would call the worst run of my life. I knew it wouldn't be a great run because I would be alone, but I was hoping that I could pull it out somehow. I got up and got my things around - this included my hydration belt (2 bottles filled with water and 2 with propel), ipod, cell phone, PowerBar Energy Blasts (raspberry), and the remains of my Clif Shot Bloks (Mountain Berry?).
While gathering all these things I toasted an english muffin to eat. I felt like I was forgetting something but couldn't for the life of me remember, so I headed towards the Y. It was around 6:40 when I started running. Pardon the horrible blurry picture, but I really wasn't in the mood to cheese it up for another!

I started off on the completed portion of the pufferbelly trail. Less than a mile in I realized what it is that I had forgotten - a very crucial part of my running attire with all the humidity recently - BODYGLIDE. Oh crap, how was I going to run 9 miles without bodyglid? I decided to tough it out and see how I fared. Another few minutes later I started having horrible stomach cramps. I have been battling these cramps for several weeks now when running - and they are SO painful. I felt like I was running strong, my pace was pretty close to where I wanted it. Unfortunately I had to stop and use the bathroom at 1.8ish miles. I ate two shot bloks at about mile 3. And was feeling okay, but then again at 3.5ish miles I had to stop to use the restroom. I started thinking to myself that if I had to stop after EVERY lap it was going to be a LONG run. After the second bathroom break I started running and I hit an emotional wall - I was not even half done - HOW ON EARTH WAS I GOING TO RUN ANOTHER 5+ MILES?!? Luckily it was short lived and my stomach seemed to settle down.

My optimism was short lived, around mile 4.5 I started having pain and cramping in my ribs, just below where my bra sits. It started out sort of mild, so I decided that this run wasn't going to be about time, my goal today was just to finish the whole distance without walking. I slowed down some and tried to focus on anything other than the pain. Just after mile 5 it got to be too much and I had to walk. I tried to walk just long enough to get rid of the pain and then start jogging again. There were several long stretches of walking. In desperation I tried to "hold" my ribs while running and that seemed to help some, but it was by no means a solution, the pain was still making me take frequent walk breaks. I was falling apart inside and just wanted to quit. Somehow I kept pushing though, at mile 7 all I wanted to do was call my mom and cry but I forced myself to keep going.

The last of my mileage was going to be on the Salomon Farm loop around the Y. I decided that I would walk up just up to where the loop parallels the road and run until the trail turned back away from the road. I started running and managed to run past that point, I was pushing myself to run to the next mile marker every time I passed on. I ended up making it about 3/4 a mile without stopping. I hated myself for having to walk, I couldn't understand why everything had fallen apart at not even 5 miles. I was so frustrated when my phone announced that my pace was over 10:00 per mile. I knew I couldn't finish in 90 minutes but I wanted to be as close to that as I could, so after a short walk break I started running again. I was determined to finish off my mileage running, so I set short distance goals (I will run to that tree, then when I got to that tree I would run to the next, etc) and managed to finish off the rest of my mileage running.

Here are my splits:
Mile 1 - 9:23
Mile 2 - 9:03
Mile 3 - 9:45
Mile 4 - 9:11
Mile 5 - 9:46
Mile 6 - 11:14
Mile 7 - 13:02
Mile 8 - 10:33
Mile 9 - 10:02
Final time for 9.02 miles - 1:32:09 (avg pace: 10:13 m/m)

And my pace/elevation chart:

I don't know how much I walked, but it was far too much for my liking. I feel very defeated by this long run and sort of want to quit. I know bad runs happen to everyone, and honestly my time wasn't terrible. But, what bothers me most is that I don't know what caused the terrible pain in my ribs so I don't know how to fix it. Well, that and of course the stomach cramping and digestive issues - I know what causes them but can't seem to find something that cures them.

In an attempt to put a positive spin on this crap-frickin-tastic run, a few positive notes:
- I finished all the mileage
- the lack of body glide ended up not being an issue
- my legs and breathing felt fine with the running I was able to do

Readers poll: Has anyone had these rib cramps while running? Did you figure out what caused them/fixed them? For reference: Mine started out on the right side and ended up traveling around to the left side too.

One last question - what do you do to help yourself get over what felt like an "epic fail" of a run?

Amazing Blogger Award

Holly at Rust Belt Runner tagged me on the Amazing Blogger Award. Thanks a ton. Hope these fun questions help my readers get to know me a bit better.

[Favorite Cartoon Character]

If I try to think back to what I watched as a kid, I think the first thing that comes to mind is Rainbow Brite. Strawberry Shortcake would probably be a close second. I actually had glasses as a kid, and they had strawberry shortcake on them.

[Favorite Thing to Photograph]

My kids

[Favorite Thing to Cook]

Anything from my "favorite" cookbook right now - "Lean and Lovin' It" by Don Mauer. The picture above was dinner tonight - Lean Chicken Paprika. SO good.

[Favorite Way to Exercise]

Until recently I would have told you swimming, but now I think I would say running, preferably NOT alone.

[Favorite Movie]

This is harder than I thought it would be. I enjoy watching movies, but don't spend a ton of time doing so. I don't have a favorite specific movie, but my favorite genre would be romantic comedies!

[Favorite Article of Clothing]

I have a couple of favorites, but as a general rule I would say my favorite piece of clothing right now would be a denim skirt (I have 3)!

[Favorite Flower]

I don't have a favorite necessarily, but I like calla lilies quite a bit, they were the flower I used for my wedding.

[Favorite Breakfast]

Pretty much every breakfast for the last 45 weeks has been the same - chocolate mini wheats and a cup of skim milk! I eat the cereal dry and drink the milk separate!

[Favorite Book]

I hate to admit I don't really read often. I can't remember the last book I read, probably some cheap romance novel! :-/

[Favorite Place to Be]

Cheesy answer, but wherever my friends and family are. As a result of going where the jobs are, we are "alone" here in Indiana. Our family is all in Michigan, Alabama, and other states. Our friends are scattered just as far. I would love to have everyone that is important to me in the same place for a week or two!

[Favorite Sporting Event]

I think this photo sums it up pretty well!

Hope you all enjoyed reading a bit about me. I only have 9 followers and most of you have already done this, so I am not going to tag anyone specific. However, if you would like to do this, consider yourself tagged - you are all amazing!

Time for bed, gotta be up early for a 9 mile run tomorrow... these long runs are so intimidating!

Clarity is in the Shadow?

First, weekly weigh-in time! Luckily, I finally shed the weight from my weekend of indulgence with my good friend.

Week 43: Down 2.4 pounds
Total Weight Lost: 122.8 pounds
Left to goal: 8.8 pounds

Just to summarize my running since my last post: I ran 2.5 miles yesterday morning alone and then 4.5 before/after my half marathon class. I LOVE these runs with other people, especially "L." "L" is a blast and a half, she has me laughing most of the time and its a great way to take my mind off of the monotony and sometimes pain.

I think I may have figured out my shirt saying for warrior dash, now I just need suggestions on potential tweaks of wording and a color for the shirt. To summarize I will be wearing a black running skirt and a light olive green bondiband. I would LOVE to wear something bright and fun, but what color would coordinate with the olive green? Would love to add pizazz to the back, is there a more fun way to say what its saying? And, last questions... should I keep the weight loss mentioned on the front or move it to the back? And, should I keep the wording as is or switch it to "123 pounds lost"?
FRONT:
BACK:

Now, onto the real subject of this blog - struggling with negative body image. Let me start off by saying that I am SO proud of everything that I have accomplished. I know it is a HUGE deal to lose 120+ pounds, I know I am healthier for it, and yes I feel a lot better overall than I did before (minus the fatigue, aches, and pain involved with training for a half marathon). Let me be honest though, I am 28 and I do care how I look. While my weight loss was not totally about looking better, it has played a part in it of course. I am now under 9 pounds away from my goal and I hate the way my body looks, and truthfully, I am sure it won't look any better if/when I reach my goal. It's frustrating that I have worked so hard to get to where I want to be and my body just will never look like I want it to. When I look in the mirror I either see my old body at 307 pounds and a size 24, or a *slightly* smaller body with lots of loose flabby skin. I had a realization last night running with "L" from my half marathon class. I said to her "I wish I saw in the mirror what I see when I look at my shadow while running." Her response was, "that's what I see." It's funny to me that I can look at my shadow on the ground and see what looks to me like an athletic (albeit not super skinny) figure, but I look in the mirror and all I see is fat. I wish I had the clarity in the mirror that I see when I look at my shadow. All the work I have been putting in physically is not going to be enough to kick the fat girl out of my vision. Somehow, I have to get inside my head and learn to accept myself as I am now. As my good friend told me this weekend "Jenn, its okay, they are battle scars." We all have them, I just have to learn to embrace mine and realize that those battle scars are there to always remind me why I have worked so hard to get to where I am now.

For those of you who have struggled with body image issues, how do you cope? How do you deal with those feelings of negativity?

Warrior Dash!

I am less than two weeks from the Warrior Dash and I am trying to figure out what to do for a shirt. I want to be able to toss everything that I am wearing (other than my bondi-band which is small enough to wash out). I guess it sounds crazy to wear disposable clothes, but I will be going straight from the warrior dash to a family function out of state. I can't imagine leaving stinky muddy clothes sitting in my van for 2 days! So far I plan to wear:
- old oversized black running skirt
- my least favorite sports bra
- old socks
- old tennis shoes (which I will donate at the race)
- olive green bondi band that reads "If you see me on the ground, drag me across the finish line?"
- black fingerless gloves to help protect my hands from blisters (I am afraid I will look like a dork wearing these, but terrified the ropes will tear up my hands)

I need help from my readers: what do I do about a shirt? I am thinking I will do a shirt with some sort of saying on it. I have iron on transfers, and the potential to maybe get heat transfer vinyl. I want it to be something about the warrior dash, potentially working in my 120 pound weight loss and such. HELP!?! I also wonder what color I could use for the shirt.. I don't think I will be able to find olive green, so what would match the best?

I am trying to decide whether or not to wear knee socks to protect my legs and whether or not to duck tape my shoes on. I have read suggestions of both, but just as many people suggesting its not necessary!

I am sort of disappointed to be running the warrior dash alone, but I am excited to be crossing something else off my "bucket list."

I have really been slacking on everything except my running lately, I haven't been swimming or weight lifting. It is my goal to get some weight training in at least once a week the next two weeks, maybe twice. I really want to get some upper body work in to prepare for the run.

3.5 miles down today, I finished in 30:10 - it felt really strong, even if not my fastest run. Still struggling with sore hamstrings and hoping they feel better by Saturday. Really need to work on something more exciting for this blog - but having been struggling with illness in my house (myself, my kids, and even my dog) has left me drained.

Success!

First, to make this post slightly less boring, a photo of me before bed last night after gallivanting in downtown Fort Wayne! :) Last night I spent some time with my friend who came to visit me from out of town. We went downtown and walked a couple miles and then decided to go to a local restaurant - Club Soda. I ordered a caesar salad (sans dressing) and thai coconut chicken lettuce wraps and paired it with a flirtini (I think? my friend ordered it for me. haha). After dinner we walked back to the car, didn't get home til around midnight. Between the martini and the late night, I was petrified about how my run would go this morning. Add to that my hamstrings that were still burning from my 3.5 hours of weeding earlier in the week and I was sure I was doomed.

6 am rolled around and I made myself get up, get dressed and run downstairs. I have been struggling with stomach cramps while running, so I decided to try something different this morning. I ate a plain toasted english muffin and got my hydration belt ready while my friend got ready ready to go with me. We headed to the YMCA trail where I did a combination of the loop around Salomon Farm and the short Pufferbelly trail. I did a total of two loops around the farm and did the Pufferbelly trails 2.5 times. I managed to find someone running around the right pace and decided to fall into stride next to them. We had a nice conversation and it made the first 3 miles much more enjoyable. I made a pit stop to the rest room around 3.4 miles in.

I took two energy shot bloks between 3 and 3.5 miles. This seemed to work better than last week, so I will try that again next week to see if works again. I also plan to try eating a light breakfast before hand - it really seemed to keep the stomach cramps at bay today. My friend must have known I was struggling because they checked in with me around mile 5 and gave me a little pep talk. Knowing someone was there that would know if I was walking gave me the little extra push I needed to keep putting one foot in front of the other. At about 6.5 miles in, I gave myself a pep talk and said "I've got this.. I won't let this beat me." Unfortunately my ipod died around the same time. I kept trucking but at about 7.5 miles I was really dragging and was afraid I wouldn't be able to finish. However, at that point I was determined to finish up without walking so I pushed through despite the burning in my legs. I hit 8 miles and I don't think I could have had a bigger smile on my face - seriously felt like a huge hurdle cleared.

Good thing I burned over 1000 calories because I took my friend to breakfast at Flat Top followed by an afternoon snack of frozen yogurt at Yo-Yos! Not looking forward to getting on the scale tomorrow - but, I will have to remind myself I am dieting to be healthy and enjoy life. If I can't have a day where I eat without worrying, its not going to work in the long run. It was worth every calorie - the visit with my friend was overdue and gave me a much needed mood boost.

In addition to the running, I walked 2-3 miles throughout the day to loosen my legs up and hopefully prevent me from being too sore tomorrow. We will see how it goes, praying my approach works. :)

I am planning to head to bed shortly - I am EXHAUSTED.

Readers Question: What did you do this weekend?

Life is Crazy Busy

As my title suggests, I am super busy right now and am struggling to find the time to sit down to compose or read blogs. I promise I will get all caught up come Sunday or Monday. I have had alot of duties to handle with my homeowners association which is always fun. Daniel had pictures today too, which always takes way longer than it should.

I have to run out the door soon to go help tear down our association's old play equipment, but I wanted to post to let everyone know I am still here and haven't forgotten about all of you.

While I am at it, my weekly weigh in:

Week 42: Down 3 pounds
Total lost: 120.4 pounds
Left to goal: 11.2 pounds
