Fear of Missing Out

Okay my bloggy friends - I need some advice.   I have a 20k next weekend and then a half marathon on April 1st.  There is a cool local race this weekend that I wasn't planning to run, but I have a fear of missing out on this fun race.  Doesn't help that I looked at last year's results and if they have a similar turn out I could potentially place in my age group...  knowing that I couldn't go out and run a "fun run."

I really need to get in a practice long run this Saturday afternoon.  I normally run in the morning, the 20k is at noonish, and has no bathrooms on course, so I REALLY need to get my stomach figured out before then.

A couple of other factors:  the race is $25 (which seems high for a 5k) and I have several friends running it (not that I would run with, but we could hang out/chat before and after).

All that being said... WHAT DO I DO?!?!

  1. I vote long run, save your moolah. You already know you kick butt at 5k's!! Don't risk an injury racing to win. That's just my opinion! :)

  2. You have to decide which race is more important - the 5K or being ready for the 20K. Of course, you could run the 5K and then do the rest of the long training run after.

It's always tough when race dates are back to back and you really want to do them all.

Just figure out your priorities and what's most important to you :)!

Either way I'm sure you'll make the right decision for you and it'll work out for the best.

  3. I know the race is getting better but I've done it, and I don't think it's a must run. And, to me, it's definitely not worth $25. You're always going to have to pick and choose races, and it comes down to your goals. Will this 5K bring you closer to a goal? If so, do it. If not, skip it and think about it next year.

  4. I'm with Kimberly - it was a disaster the first year with timing and distance!!!!! Last year it was better but still had quite a bit of train-wreck thrown in. It's definitely not as fun as it sounds and it's definitely NOT worth the $25 registration fee. There are dozens of other 5K's that are WAY better. Kimberly gave good advice all the way around. Promise you're not missing an awesome race!!! I vowed to never do it again, but . . Chris is doing it and when I signed up I needed some motivation to actually go out and run.
